LUKE  1 : 57-66 -80 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (JUNE 24, 2020)

When the time came for Elizabeth, she give birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives  heard  the merciful  lord had  done a wonderful  thing for her,  and they rejoice with her.

When, the eight day, they came to attend the circumcision of the child, they wanted to name  him Zachariah  after his father.  But his mother said, “ not so he shall be called John.”

They said to her, “ But no one in your family has that name!”  and they made signs to his father  for the name he wanted to give him, Zachariah asked for a writing tablet. And wrote on it,  “ HI name is John; “ and they were very surprised, immediately, Zachariah could speak again, and his words were in praise of God. A holy fear came on all  in the neighborhood, and throughout the hill country of Judea the people talked about these events. All who heard of id pondered in their minds. And wondered, “what will this child be?” For they understood that the hand of the Lord was with him.

As the child grows up, he was seen to be strong in the Spirit; and he lived in the desert, until the day when he appeared openly in Israel.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

All of us in this world came by destiny. That is   why, regardless of what we do outside God’s plan will turn into nothing. There is nothing wrong about doing our best in fact, appreciable as long as you did it in accordance to the will of God.

In this Bible reading, John “the Baptist” was born ahead of Jesus. He is regarded as the voice in the dessert calling out loud “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.”

John knows his place when Jesus came to him and got baptized. Though John was the subject of men’s eye during his time, he knows he is the second and that Jesus is the first.  And he was very happy about it. John’s recognition was not important but Jesus was through his humble works.

Everyone’s role in this world is pre-charted. Our mission is to perform our roles according to what God wants us to do. John was destined to prepare the way of the Lord by proclaiming the gospel and baptizing those who wanted to turn to Jesus. John even baptize Jesus from the very start regardless of authority and power because every role is greater than anybody within the tenets of service so things will be prepared in a way should be.  In the concept of service, all has the right to avail regardless of personality; authority and power as Jesus submit himself to be baptized by John.

The challenge brothers and sisters, we are the new version of John. In our own way, how could we be able to prepare the way of the Lord? While John is considered as the “voice of the dessert”, How would you like to be called by doing the same? Our God is the same God of yesterday, today and tomorrow. We need to prepare His coming in the same way John had done some two thousand years ago.

MATTHEW: 7: 6. 12-14 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (JUNE 23, 2020)

Do not give what is holy to the dogs, or throw your pearls before pigs. They might trample on them, and then turn on you and tear you to pieces.

So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there, you have the law and the prophets. Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the road, that leads to destruction, and may go that way. How narrow is the gate that leads to life; and how rough, the road; few there are, who find it.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

Truly the world is not a resemblance of heaven. Man’s mindset of this world is to have things done or happen in an easy way, live in an easy way, and even die in an easy way. Men do not like to sweat for themselves to have a quality life.

This Bible reading speaks from the other side. As Jesus said “narrow is the gate to life and wide is the road to destruction.” This means that choosing an  easy way of this life would not end us to the Father’s house in heaven. Yes! it is true that most of the time humans love shortcuts and cutting corners but be reminded to choose a long journey  if you want to reach the final destination  in heaven for straight is the road to destruction while long and winding is the road  to life.

MATTHEW: 7: 1-5 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (JUNE 22, 2020)

Do not judge; and you will not be judged.  In the same way you judge others, you will be judged; and the measure you use for others will be used for you.

Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, and not see the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, Come, let me take the speck from your eye, as long as that plank is in your own? Hypocrite, remove the plank out of your own eye; then, you will see clearly, to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

Confucius said, “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want done unto you.” This saying is considered as the “Golden Rule” for  it promotes justice and equal treatment of  fellow men. However, many of us are not hook with this rule for the consequence of one’s action   may take sometimes longer to be noticed. What is very interesting  about this  rule is its unwavering application throughout the ages.

In a closer look,  this “golden rule” comes in various corollary that guides many in their pursuit of life in accordance to the behavior, values and will  of the Lord Jesus Christ some two thousand years ago. This could be easily seen in relation to man’s various walks of life. Like for instance, “one reaps only what he has sown”, “what ones give to the world is the same and equal thing ones will receive from the world.”    This Bible reading revealed to us that the world is following a vicious cycle for us men of no escape.

In fact, this rule is a core shadow of the second greatest commandment “love your neighbor as yourself”, Matthew 22:39. If one loves others as himself then logically will follow the converse of the golden rule, “Do unto others what you want others do unto you.”

THE PROBLEM AND ITS RESEARCH DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Educators are tasked to educate the students according to the standard set by the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines. They are expected to give their best to produce academically competent graduates particularly in the secondary schools to prepare them for college education.

The Department of Education, with the educators, has failed to met this expectation as revealed in the national performance of the high school students for the previous school year through the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC). Mathematics performance is 50.70 percent for school year 2004-2005, 47.82 percent for school year  2005-2006 and 51.27 percent for school year 2011-2012. This result is far below 75 percent which is supposed to be the minimum standard of achievement expected from the students. On this basis students’ Mathematical ability is not going any further vis-a-vis with the   ( continue below….)

This study sought to determine the profile, the level of self-efficacy, the level of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation of the students and teachers of Borbon district for school year 2013-2014. It also sought to determine the relationship of the three independent variables: self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to the dependent variable, the mathematical  performance of the second year students of Borbon.

The descriptive correlation method of research was employed using the modified and adopted questionnaire. The average age of the grade VIII students of Borbon   is 14.10 years old.  The combined family income of their parents is less than the poverty index (Php7821 pesos a month) and most of them are high school graduate.

The student respondents are highly efficacious, highly motivated intrinsically and extrinsically with mathematics performance level of approaching proficiency. A linear relationship of self-efficacy, intrinsic  and extrinsic motivation to the students’ Math performance is increasing.

The combined effect of these three mentioned  independent variables to students’ Math performance is 13.6 percent. Among the three mentioned learning construct, intrinsic motivation can predict Mathematics performance of the students with a coefficient constant value of 0.205 significant at 0.05 level.

The teachers of public and private secondary schools of Borbon are highly efficacious. A direct relationship exists between teachers efficacy level and students performance.

Based on the result and conclusion of this study a development plan for both teachers and students for SY 2014-2015 shall be adopted to improve or propagate their self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation level.

THE NATURE OF INQUIRY AND  RESEARCH

A. The meaning of Research

Research is derived from the prefix  re, which mean to repeat or to redo or again and the root word  search, which means  to find or to look into.   Therefore, in a very simple sense,  Research is to search again. Research French origin is reserche which means  to travel through or to survey

B. A comprehensive definition of Research includes the following:

  1. A quest driven by a specific question which needs an answer
  2. A process by which we find answers to questions.
  3. A continuous discovery and exploration of the unknown

C. Definition of Research according to Experts

  1. Research is concerned with the finding of answer.(Manson & Bramble, 1989)
  2. Research is a systematic process of collecting and logically analyzing information or data for some purpose according to Macmillan and Schumacher (1989).
  3. Research is a systematic and empirical approach to answering questions. (Bieger and Gail, 1996)
  4. Research is a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of natural phenomena guided by theory and hypothesis about the presumed relations among such phenomena (Kerlinger,1986)

D.  A research can be considered as systematic when it includes the following:

  1. Identification of problems
  2. Relating of the problem with the existing theories
  3. Collection of data
  4. Analysis and interpretation of data
  5. Drawing of conclusions
  6. Integrating conclusion to the knowledge stream

E. A research is controlled when it includes the following:

  1. Carefully planned
  2. Well defined problem
  3. Variables are identifiable
  4. Instruments are carefully selected or constructed

F. A research is said to be result based when…

  1. Well articulated findings
  2. Carefully tested hypothesis for unbiases
  3. Drawn conclusion
  4. End up with recommendation based on the findings and conclusion

G. Values of Research

`           1. Improves the quality and way of life

  1. Improves Teaching-Learning Process
  2. Improves Student’s Achievements
  3. Improves delivery of public service
  4. Satisfies man’s various needs
  5. Reduces the burden of work
  6. Provides wider and better understanding about man’s existence and the universe
  7. Improves the quality and supply of foods and basic needs

The general values of research are to provide every human race volumes of knowledge for a better existence.

H. Ways of obtaining knowledge

  1. Expert opinion (note: even experts opinion can be doubted)
  2. Sensory Experiences
  3. Agreement with others
  4. Reasoning (inductive or deductive reasoning)

            Example:

                       All men are mortal

                        Gary is a man

                        Therefore, Gary is mortal

  1. Common Sense

                        Examine the syllogism below

If it rains the ground is wet

                        The ground is wet

Therefore, it rained ???  ( not necessarily)

I. The purpose/ importance of Research

  1. Improve existing techniques and practices
  2. Finds answer to queries and problems
  3. Acquired better and deeper understandings of various theories and principles
  4. Satisfies researcher’s curiosity
  5. Provides basis for an appropriate action
  6. Basis for making a decision

In general, the purpose of research is to discover the truth of about an unknown subject for inclusion on the stream of knowledge and to verify the veracity truth found some fifty or more years ago.

MATTHEW 10: 26-33 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 21, 2020)

There is nothing covered that will not be uncovered. There is nothing hidden that will not be made known. What I am telling you in the dark, you must speak in the light. What you hear in private, proclaim from the house tops. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but have no power to kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of Him who can destroy both body and the soul in hell. For a few cents you can buy two sparrows. Yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father knowing. As for you, every hair of your head has been counted. Do not be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows!

Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. Whoever rejects me before others, I will reject before my Father in heaven.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

When Jesus immerse into the world and enjoin the activities of man, He open up himself to his disciples and to his followers. His life gradually turns into an open book as the Father in heaven had allowed it to ordinary man like us.
In similar way, the Bible reading of today teaches us to completely open ourselves to the Lord because our God is a known God.

When He said “What I am telling you in the dark, you must speak in the light.” Jesus is simply telling us to recall moments of our darkness and got to share how the Lord helps us  overcome those trying times. This is the very reason why we are encourage to share our own experiences with the Lord neither in the private nor in the group of few but if possible have it done in the “house tops” according to this reading. Do not keep what is happening in secret but be bold to share the goodness of the Lord to those who really needs it.

Often times, when given a chance to share how God works in their ups and downs would normally think it twice and more often say no than yes. Why? Because they don’t have the guts or in fear of doing the whole thing, thinking it would lead them to become a laughing stock. But Jesus reminded us in return that our Father does not even allow a sparrow to fall into the ground without him knowing it. He even added that not a single hair of our head is not accounted. Meaning, every details of our lives is under His close management and there is no enough reason  to be afraid of in this life.

In the final note of this reading, Jesus said ” Whoever acknowledge me before others, I will do the same before my Father and those who reject me, will be rejected before my Father in heaven.” Jesus encourages us to witness him before men of this world for when judgement comes He will also stand as our witness in front of the Father in heaven. All we need is to pour out all our trust to him and all things happen according to His will here on earth as it is in heaven.

On the Occasion of Fathers Day Celebration

Family is considered as the basic unit of the society. It is in this unit where cultural mastery is simulated before individual finally mainstream into it. The persons responsible in the making are none other than married couple who commit to perform their respective roles in the family as functional unit of the society.

A typical family, always have a father and a mother. However, in this changing times and complexities of life, a person may become a father figure or a mother figure depending on their role in the family. But, regardless of the status, recognition should not fall short on its kind and classification. Being a father by virtue of marriage or by role does not really matter as the world looks forward to congratulate all the fathers of the world.

Today’s Fathers day celebration is considered as one of a kind. We all know how fathers have offered their lives in exchange for the welfare of their beloved families while beating the odds of life. They become warriors in their own way acknowledging no defeat just to provide the needs of their families.  And for this, congratulations to all the fathers.

Fathers are worthy to be congratulated as they perform the following roles:

  1. As protector of the family. Families are confidently safe with the presence of the father or a father figure substitute. He will never allow anyone to hurt any member of the family in his watch.
  2. He is the powerhouse of the family. Being such, the father is the independent figure of the family who may have everything upon request. He is the person who could hardly say no to the children’s request. He is the one who opens up the world to their children.
  3. He shows unconditional love and respect to their partner. He is the person who understands difficult circumstances of life for the good of the family.
  4. Despite being busy, he always looks forward to have a quality time of his family for bonding and nurturing closer family relationship.
  5. Though his love abounds in all occasion, they never fails to correct their children as part of the formation and developmental processes.
  6. Though fathers are considered as the bread earner of the family, they always find time to teach their children about the ways of life and closely assist and monitor their presence and performance in school.

The mentioned roles are reminders for us to look into and quantify how our fathers are doing everyday. The mentioned  duties and responsibilities cannot be taken for granted for without them doing seriously, society could be sick and terrible. Great are their contribution to the society that even worldwide celebration is not enough to compensate the nature and impact of their contribution.

In the final note, it is my joy and honor to congratulate all the fathers of the world, father by marriage and father by role, of the great things they have done to their respective family. May all continue to serve their family members up to the last breath of their lives.

PRAYER TO ALL THE FATHERS

Father God, we thank you for all the blessing you have given to all the fathers of the world. We thank you for keeping them strong, faithful and loyal to their respective duties and responsibilities as the head of the family. Thank you for keeping them safe on their way to look for all the provision of this life most especially against the  danger pose by the pandemic COVID 19.

Heavenly Father we are lifting up to you ,all the fathers of the world, into your divine care and protection so that they may become an  object of  hope, strength,  and inspiration of their family in this trying time. This we hope and pray. Amen.

LUKE 2:41-51 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION ( JUNE 20, 2020)

Every year, the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, as was customary. And when Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them, according to the custom of this feast. After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents did not know it. They assumed that he was in their group of travelers, and, after walking the whole day, they looked for him among their relatives and friends. As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem, searching for him; and, on the third day, they found him on the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers. His parents were very surprised when they saw him; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your Father and I were worried while searching for you.”

POINTS OF REFLECTION

This Bible reading highlighted the occasion wherein Jesus left the crowd of his parents and chooses to be with the teachers listening and asking questions. Upon the knowledge of  Mary and Joseph that Jesus was not with the crowd leaving Jerusalem, they search for him and there found Jesus in the Temple with the Teachers. Seeing Jesus, Mary who was overwhelmed with so much worries said “Son, why have you done this to us? Your Father and I were worried while searching for you.”

Humanity has so much to worry about life. They worry for supplies, securities, future, profession, positions, love life, etc. They are too much occupied by their daily activities and advancement like Mary and Joseph who were not able to make notice when Jesus had left the crowd until the next day.

Much of our worries belong to this world. However, regardless of how many worries we may have now, this Bible reading reminded us that none of these worries are worth worrying for. Mary and Joseph did worry when Jesus was nowhere to be found in the accompanying crowd. That is why; the real thing that is worth worrying of this life is the tendency of losing the kingdom of God without Jesus.

MATTHEW 11: 25-30 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (JUNE 19, 2020)

On that occasion, Jesus said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth, praise you; because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, this was your gracious will.

Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart; and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy; and my burden is light.”

POINTS OF REFLECTION

This Bible reading speaks to us the greatness of God’s love. The Father unpacked himself through Jesus who for long time, in the period of the Old Testament, has remained hidden to the wise and the learned few. Through Jesus, He has made himself known to us as He said” No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to Reveal him.”

Ancient Greek Philosophers hold the beliefs that Supreme Being cannot be “moved” or “touched” by anything that go on in the world. They added, He is “detached”, and “unconcerned” because his perfection prevent him from being moved by the plight of the mortal. But God showed the complete opposite of their stance by letting him known to the simple people.

Knowing God is neither a choice nor an accident but by His grace for it is He who chooses whom He may reveal himself.  In the context of the Bible, God chooses to reveal himself to the simple people not to the wise and to the learned. It is to the people like them whom God entrusted his identity by grace and love.

God clearly revealed to us Christian His Sacred Heart as opposed to the beliefs of the wise and the learned. When Jesus immerse to this world, showed that He weeps with us, he care for us and even died for us. His love is so great and pure as he said to comfort “come to me who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Not only that, He even offered his yoke in exchange of his, meaning He is truly moved and touched by the plight of human.
