THE PROBLEM AND ITS RESEARCH DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Educators are tasked to educate the students according to the standard set by the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines. They are expected to give their best to produce academically competent graduates particularly in the secondary schools to prepare them for college education.

The Department of Education, with the educators, has failed to met this expectation as revealed in the national performance of the high school students for the previous school year through the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC). Mathematics performance is 50.70 percent for school year 2004-2005, 47.82 percent for school year  2005-2006 and 51.27 percent for school year 2011-2012. This result is far below 75 percent which is supposed to be the minimum standard of achievement expected from the students. On this basis students’ Mathematical ability is not going any further vis-a-vis with the   ( continue below….)

This study sought to determine the profile, the level of self-efficacy, the level of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation of the students and teachers of Borbon district for school year 2013-2014. It also sought to determine the relationship of the three independent variables: self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to the dependent variable, the mathematical  performance of the second year students of Borbon.

The descriptive correlation method of research was employed using the modified and adopted questionnaire. The average age of the grade VIII students of Borbon   is 14.10 years old.  The combined family income of their parents is less than the poverty index (Php7821 pesos a month) and most of them are high school graduate.

The student respondents are highly efficacious, highly motivated intrinsically and extrinsically with mathematics performance level of approaching proficiency. A linear relationship of self-efficacy, intrinsic  and extrinsic motivation to the students’ Math performance is increasing.

The combined effect of these three mentioned  independent variables to students’ Math performance is 13.6 percent. Among the three mentioned learning construct, intrinsic motivation can predict Mathematics performance of the students with a coefficient constant value of 0.205 significant at 0.05 level.

The teachers of public and private secondary schools of Borbon are highly efficacious. A direct relationship exists between teachers efficacy level and students performance.

Based on the result and conclusion of this study a development plan for both teachers and students for SY 2014-2015 shall be adopted to improve or propagate their self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation level.
