JOHN 6:51-58 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION

JOHN 6: 51-58 GIFT OF BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

I am the living bread from heaven; whoever eats of this bread will live forever. The bread I shall give is my flesh, and I will give it for the life of the world.”
The Jew were arguing among themselves, ” How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

So Jesus replied, ” Truly, I say ti you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. The one who eats my flesh and drink my blood lives eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. My flesh is really food, and my blood is truly drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood, live in me, and I in them. Just as the Father who is life, sent me, and I have life from the Father, so whoever eats me will have life from me. This is the bread from heaven; not like that of your ancestors. Who eat and later died. Those who eats this bread will live forever.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

There is a saying that goes ” We become what we eat and drink.” The gospel of the day is about the gift of the body and blood of Christ to us. Brothers and sisters this is the gift of the Holy sacrament where in, symbolically, we eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ during the Holy Communion.

This is not only about the ceremonial practice that we usually do during attendance of masses but more of how we become Christ like in our daily chores and activities.

When we say “Eating the flesh of the Son” , we mean to offer or dedicate our temporal body in the same way Jesus had done while He was with us some two thousand years ago. And “Drinking the blood of the Son” means living a life not just in the comfort of this world but in the discomfort of this world to win the kingdom of God in heaven.

When Jesus said ” those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me and I in them”, He mean that by embracing  the procedural growth in the Christian community would lead us to him and he would be with us till eternity. It is true that we all need substantial food and drink to satisfy this temporal body but more we need the food and drink of the spirit’s presence to nourish our soul unto the Father.

LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE

In the context of humanity, all are born leader and follower. One could be a leader in his own court and a follower in the other court. In other words leadership is purely relative to life circumstances which could be area specific, event specific, role specific and skills specific.

Regardless of leadership specificity, many agree that there are born leaders and there are made leaders. Born leaders are men who upon birth have already followers and have leadership favor, preferences and respect inherited from their ancestors. Though the grace of birth by some degree labeled individual as leader, does not support the idea that a  person has already the package of leadership traits, experiences and training needed in the exercise of his duties and responsibilities.

Inside the box leadership privileges by birth may not respond exactly to the demands and expectations of the community. He needs to acquire the necessary traits, experiences and training in preparation for the responsibilities that awaits him upon assuming the new position in rank.

Made leaders are those who conquer the world of popularity by showing exemplary work performances that push them up in the upper echelon of  leadership ladder. These leaders have great stories to tell and their lives are worth learning for. These are the leaders who rose from nothing to complete abundance out of their labor and hard works.  Their leadership formative years were crucial for their traits were productive options carefully chosen and enliven out of their personal vision and mission. They also have real time rich experiences out from the teaching of life as they come to win over difficult situations. Along the way, they also choose the kind of training to attend to according to their self assessment readiness.

Born leaders do not grow in adversities. They are not forced to learn new traits instead acquired it through modeling of their elders. Their experiences are second hand from the very start and learned it by way of simulation. Their training is structured according to the duties and responsibilities they are to assume.

Both born leaders and made leaders are shape  as to their traits, experiences and training. But they differ in the process of acquiring it. Regardless of the type of leader one may hail from, there are  necessary characteristics and personality traits  that a leader must possess.

CHARACTERISTICS AND PERSONAL TRAITS  OF A LEADER

  1. VISIONARY

A leader must have a very clear mental image of success doable in  the  span of time. This will allow him to profile his current situation, quantify the gaps,  prepare strategic plan, pick the right kind of personalities to work with  to reach the vision.

  1. EXCELLENT IN LANGUAGE SKILLS

Success is not a one man role. A group of people will make it possible. Nobody would commit to be with you until such  time your vision becomes their vision. The way to do it depends on one’s communication skills. Successfully doing this, creates your inner circle of success.

  1. PREPAREDNESS OF THE MISSION

After doing the current status profiling,  the gap would be clear. And in order to realize the vision, the gap must  be closed  according to the success timeline chart. Every move-in points of the gap is a mission to hurdle. Every mission episode must be accomplish regardless of the challenges that may comes along the way. Be an able  team leader of the mission presented in project form.

  1. UNSELFISH INTEREST TO OTHERS

While the team is kicking off into the mission,  the needs of the  team members must not be taken for granted. It is therefore the leader’s responsibility to respond to the needs of the team mates while on the action of accomplishing the mission.

  1. HIGHER INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT (IQ)

Before kicking off for a mission or project careful planning is required.  Remember failing to plan is the same as planning to fail. Sure failure would be  along the way if the plan goes out of the context.

During implementation, parts of the plan may not be working practically, quick decision making would be demanded to leverage non- conformity with the laid out plan. Wisdom is needed in a quite brand new situation.

  1. HIGHER EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT (EQ)

Mission or project pressure could not be  avoided. The worse thing that could happen is the crushing of the spirit among team members. As leader you need to be good in addressing emotional turmoil arising from the challenging  moments of the situation. Speaking of “challenging moments” these are happenings that would normally last for short period  of time. To handle it carefully on its height is important for the success of the mission or project. Likewise it will ruin the the whole thing for the mission.

6.OPTIMISTIC ON THE  OUTLOOK

As a leader, spirit of optimism must be the hymn  of the team. The topic of every minute discussion must be towards  the trophy of success. Always turn deft ear to the negative opinion for it will give another conditioning of the team members. Beliefs of success must be an all out story to tell  to encourage new ways of thinking out of a problematic situation.

  1. POSSESSING MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS

In the conduct of the mission or project implementation,  personal modes of each team members may vary from time to time responding the different levels of task modalities and difficulties. As a leader you must be quick to respond this needs before their performance  gets low. Enliven their spirit by taking out their mode on the hook of despair.  This could be in  a form of seminar sessions or a company team building enrich with the package of motivational activities.

     8.RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE SUCCESS

On the way to the realization of the vision, components of successes are happening every now and then. Prepare a provision to celebrate each component success and give rewards to everyone doing well as a team. Remember personalize award is not encourage. Success is not a work or a responsibility of one person but of the team. Competition is discouraged but rather promotes cooperation.

  1. KEEPING ALWAYS A SENSE OF GRATITUDE

Perhaps the most important personalize reward is  the leader’s unlimited expressions of gratitude and simple group blow-out reward in an inexpensive eat together session within  the ground of the business venue.

  1. STRATEGIC THINKER

A leader should be rich in innovative ideas always ready to provide solutions when a pin is on the way of the team. He should be calm even in the alarming situation not to be contaminated by the trouble of the team. A strategic approach much be ready to rescue the team’s dilemma.

Leadership task is not easy. Leadership traits must be acquired. Real time experiences must be abound.  Appropriate training must be internalized  for application. Regardless of how one emerges to become a leader either by way of crisis or circumstantial event,  by personality lead or by personal choice the mentioned leadership characteristics and personality trait will work  at play towards success.

MATTHEW 5:33-37: GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 13, 2020)

You have also heard that the people were told in the past: Do not break your oath; an oath sworn to the Lord must be kept. But I tell you this: do not take oaths.  Do not swear by the heavens, for they are God’s throne; nor by the earth, because it is his foot stool; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything else you say comes from the evil one.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

Often times, we appreciate those who are good in their choice of words to play around our thoughts. The reason why many were fooled or put into dilemma because of flowery words purposefully used to deceive fishy reality. The gospel we have, reminded us  to express ourselves in  a plain language of clarity and understanding.

The truth resides in simplicity for adorned expression might not be able to facilitate understanding. Remember, God in itself  mysterious and undefined. Faith is the key virtuous needed to be able to know God in the context of humanity. Gone  are the days in which  God kept His  words but now revealed in the open to make way towards the offer of salvation.

In which case, life is a two way traffic towards  heaven or towards hell. We need to pick out destination in this journey of life. Think about this: It is hard to get lost in a journey of no direction. Life after all is a “yes” or “no” option in responding to the call of the Lord. Say “yes” to God and restart your journey now carefully charted with the Holy Spirit as the compass needle. In this way, life’s going is meaningful, productive, happy and secured to the ends of time.

In conclusion, life security after death is just a “yes” or a “no” response. Saying yes to the Father really  matters but saying no to the father means nothingness. Try to reflect on this line brothers and sisters in Christ.

MATTHEW 5:27-32 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 12, 2020)

MATTHEW 5:27-32 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 12, 2020)

You have heard that it was said: Do not commit adultery.  But tell you this: anyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has committed adultery with her in his heart. So, if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body, than to have your whole body thrown into hell. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away!  It is better for you to lose a part of your body, than to have your whole body thrown into hell.

It was also said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. But what I tell you is this: if a man divorces his wife, except in the case of unlawful union, he causes her to commit adultery.

POINTS OF REFLECTION

There are two major classification of sins, the sin of commission and sin of omission. The sin of commission is committed by doing something that should not be done. While the sin of omission is committed by not doing something that should be done.

Chances of sin are always with us, human. It is easy to get into sin even if a person does not mean it. It can even be committed without the physical gesture via emotion and some odd feelings before the wit of our rational being. In fact, one can get into sin by a mere play of his emotion. Why because the world is a maze of life  in the wilderness which might lead to nowhere.

Though this gospel uses a woman as an object of lust (sin) cannot be taken against man for the main idea embedded in here is to make us aware that our very own desire of this world alone might be the gateway to hell. It is not wrong to have a burning desire but needs to be careful not to be dragged into the ways of darkness in the process of pursuit or in the rudiment of achieving it. An overwhelming worldly desire becomes a winning ground of darkness inside, in disguise of personal success and satisfaction.

The gift of talent we have from the Father is the seed capital of treasure but when use not in the pure intent of the Father may become an eye mask of popularity losing sight unto the Lord. The chances of sinning would be prevalent which could be noticed in the later time. Brothers and sisters, be  on our guard for many are the ways by which we could be deceived out of our worldly desire, as woman was referred to in this gospel reading.

In general, the “woman” in this gospel is not an object of sin, but a typical representation of the world which could excite a man in so much desire of material things, success and satisfaction. It becomes an eye mask and disguise to the gateway of hell. Watch out brothers and sisters! Don’t get stuck into this world for Christians are not of this world but in heaven.

MATTHEW 5:17-19 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 11, 2020)

I tell you if your sense of right and wrong is not keener than that of the lawyers and the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard, that it was said to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who murders will have to face trial. But now, I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will face trial.  Whoever insults a brother of sister is liable, to be brought before the council. Whoever calls a brother or a sister “fool!” is liable, of being thrown into the fire of hell. So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar, and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there, in front of the altar; go at once, and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don’t forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put in jail. There, you will stay, until you have paid the last penny.

POINT OF REFLECTION

The gospel of yesterday did mention a complete obedience of the law as modeled by Jesus saying that “I have not come to annul the laws and the prophet but to fulfill them.” Meaning He emphasizes how important for as Christians  to obey the laws and the words of the prophets. However, today’s gospel warned us not to overly interpret the laws and the words of the prophets. It might compromise our relationship with the community folks and the Father in heaven.

As we have learn from the writings in the Bible and today’s ways of proclaiming  God’s word, many would tend to fall into arguments about cannon laws citing verses  to support the merit of their argument.  They hung up themselves from the very details of the laws and words of the prophets but did not recognize the value and meaning beyond mere obedience to the details of actual spirit and meaning that are embedded in them.

The heart of the Laws and words of the Prophets is the true and meaningful relationship with God who has given us the law and sent to us the Prophets. Be reminded that such relationship with God can only be achieved through intimate relationship with our fellow Christians in the community and to the Father.

We could not imagine what life would become without Law.  However, this gospel cautioned us to implement the Laws with love and compassion to promote serious relationship to the people in the community and to the Father in heaven.

MATTHEW 5:17-19 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 10, 2020)

Do not think that have come to annul the law and the prophets.  I have not come to annul them, but to fulfill them. I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smallest letter or dot in the law will change, until all is fulfilled. So then, whoever breaks the least important of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them, and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the kingdom of heaven.

POINT OF REFLECTION

Laws are established system of rules to be followed to regulate actions and behavior to maintain order in the community. Laws are for everybody. It is non-selective in order to be objective in its effect.

When Jesus said “I do not come to annul the law and the prophets, instead to fulfill them.” He taught us the very important   lesson of being a good follower. We are told to follow not just the written laws in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament, but included as well oral orders from the prophets and practices in the conduct of their tradition inspired by the Holy Spirit.

In totality, there are three sources of Christian teaching which included the Bible or the Scripture, the prophesies from the prophets under  the guidance of the  Holy spirit and the Christian tradition handed down from generation according the message of the Holy Spirit.

MATTHEW 5:1-12 GOSPEL READING AND REFLECTION (June 9, 2020)

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt has lost its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It has become useless. It can only be thrown away and people will trample on it.

You are the light of the world; A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and covers it; instead, it is put on a lamp stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do, and praise your Father in heaven.

POINT OF REFLECTION

All of us are borne to be the “the salt of the earth and the light of the world.”  All are borne with the necessary potentials according to the plan of God. Perhaps one of the greatest responsibility God has given to us, is to discover and bring to the topmost functionality every hidden talent and skills He has given to us. And for all this goodness, it is therefore right and proper for us to repay Him by using our talent and skills to glorify His kingdom on earth.

We will use all we have so that the world would appreciate the goodness of God in us. Make it to the point that the world sees God in us, Christian, through our talent and skills. May everyone shine in the light of Jesus as we use our talent and skills to touch lives and bring back to Jesus His lost Sheep.

In conclusion my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, all are bestowed with the gift of wonderful talent and skills upon birth. Our greatest responsibility is to hone it and use the same to further His kingdom on earth.
