RE: Traditional Teaching v. UbD
In my opinion:

There are many things that describe traditional teaching. The most obvious is the lecture method where the teacher talks and writes on the board for 50 minutes. And the student copies reviews and understands the subject. Does the assignment and everybody is happy. There are advantages with this, such that if it works, then it is very fast and efficient. If it does not, then its a disaster and students will hate school.

UBD is a framework and not a teaching method. Constant focus on what you want to achieve. Example: "I will teach ratio and proportion so they can solve these types of problems". The opposite is "I taught this lesson (which is in the book), now what can I ask to make sure they understood the topic".

In the common Filipino's mind: UBD = activity. UBD = format with 3 columns representing the 3 stages. UBD = new style, up to date.

But actually Constructivist = Activity and interaction with students.

You can use UBD and still use Traditional methods. Because if it works, it is the fastest and most effective way.

ubd i think works well when the students are made aware of the changes are to be in classroom setup and instruction using the design. For example, the students should be familiar with group work and cooperative learning. In an English class where half the members are borderline reading handicapped, text exploration becomes really difficult. The teacher can pair off the students to accomplish the activity, and involve the entire class if L1 is used by some students in answering questions. The "ano raw?" syndrome is avoided. The teacher may apply first language bridging but not the Engalog or Taglish way.

Using the guides is quite helpful; however,. the teacher should be discriminate in using the activities. Some of them are "frustrating" to both the learners and the students. For the second year students who have been exposed to cooperative learning, retracing their footsteps back makes teaching and learning fun."Ay,maam, nagawa na po namin yan"

UbD is a backward design process. It's like "Beginning with the end in mind" as Stephen Covey would put it. We start by identifying the desired long term results. Then the assessment and the last is planning for instruction. You might want to check this website for more information:
