TOPICS:

1. US EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
There are differences between the Philippine and U.S. education system. Without intimate knowledge of these differences a potential teacher candidate is unlikely to be offered employment. Learn the different aspects of the U.S. educational system.

2. CLASSROOM CULTURE AND MANAGEMENT
There are significant differences between the expectations of a teacher in the U.S. as opposed to the Philippines. Attendants will learn U.S. classroom culture and be able to apply classroom management techniques that are effective in the U.S.

3. COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Candidates that come from abroad do not always communicate effectively with U.S. students. We will teach effective communication techniques to reduce communication barriers due to cultural differences.

4. RESUME WRITING
Your resume is your first line of communication with a potential employer. Learn better techniques for effective resume writing. Learn from a published authority on this subject.

5. MASTER THE INTERVIEW PROCESS
Learn first-hand from educators who have successfully interviewed with prestigious teaching programs in the U.S. These same educators have also hired teachers and will teach you what they look for in a candidate

6. SURVIVING YOUR FIRST YEAR
One of the greatest challenges for someone teaching in the U.S. for the first time, is not knowing what to expect in their first year of employment. We will help you understand the most common challenges faced by international educators teaching for the first time in the U.S.

FACILITATORS:

DAVE WAKEFIELD
Dave entered the Teach for America, a prestigious teaching program, featured in the New York Times and other major publications. During his commitment he made over two years of growth in reading and writing with his students. After teaching for three years at his Teach for America placement school, he moved on to teach English, economics, government, psychology, and sociology at a nationally recognized college prep charter school in Houston featured on the Oprah Winfrey show. Dave has also developed curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school students. Dave holds a bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota where he studied business, English literature, and psychology.

MARLO DIOSOMITO
Marlo found work with the United Nations' Refugee Program teaching math and science to Indochinese students who had been displaced from their homes in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia after graduating with dual degrees in Math and Chemistry from the University of the Philippines.

After completing his graduate studies in chemistry, Marlo was recruited by Houston ISD, the nation’s 7th largest school district, to teach math and science. While teaching in HISD, Marlo was involved in training teachers in instructional strategies to math, science, and technology educators across all content areas.

DANIEL SMITH
Dan joined Teach for America after graduating in journalism and history from the University of Oregon. While teaching English and ESL to high school students in Houston, Texas, Daniel's students made significant gains, on average of two grade levels, in reading and writing, exceeding district expectations. This success in the classroom drove his evolution as an educator. After coordinating and delivering academic growth as a grade level chair Daniel became an administrator well versed in urban education reform and instructional leadership. With vast experience in formative assessment, student engagement and data driven learning, Daniel is a leader in curriculum development and implementation.

BURT NADLER
Co-Program Designer & Collaborator Burton Jay Nadler, author of The Everything® Resume Book, and others, is director of the University of Rochester’s Career Center and assistant dean. He has worked in career services at the University of the Pacific, Southern Methodist University, and Dartmouth College.

Mr. Nadler has recruited for one of the largest financial services firms in the world, and has written countless articles on career and job searching in publications including The Wall Street Journal’s Managing Your Career.

Burt received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and Masters degree from Stanford University.
