Class adviser and principal to be sued over bullying incident

A teacher and the principal of a school in Cebu will be sued for allegedly failing to prevent the physical abuse of a student by a classmate. Allegedly, part of a "10-inch" pencil was poked into the student's buttock. The class adviser and the principal allegedly did not bring the child to the hospital. The eight-year old student was said to spend four days in a private hospital.

Cases like this should remind us of the need to have adequate legal protection for teachers and other school staff who, in the performance of their duties, may have to decide on things which parents may not agree afterwards. The issue in this case is why the adviser and the principal fail to bring the student to a hospital.

I do not know the procedures the school has (if it has any) over incidents like this, but prudence dictates that the parents of the child should have checked if the procedures of the school were followed. Also, they should have gone through the school's procedure of discipline over its employees before going to the media.

For the complete story: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/parents-sue-school-staff

What is problematic here is that the newspaper published the names of the teacher and the principal, even before an actual case had been brought to court. In the interest of informing the public, the newspaper could have mentioned the incident, sans the names of the accused. There was nothing more to be gained by naming the teachers. If the newspaper could give difference to priests and bishops, why not to our teachers?

Hi!

i really need some guidance...

I know the path i will be taking by next year however

*sigh*

I'm kinda confused how i will proceed

maybe you can help me decide and make the BEST CHOICE.

here:

COURSE NUMBER 1: 10 day intensive course result: be a therapist and will be able to teach children with LEARNING disability (which I REALLY LOVE). There's qualifying exam for this so in case you won't pass you won't BE ABLE to take the course...this costs 60k plus i think.
Btw, this is under NILD...National institute for Learning Disability

COURSE NUMBER 2: 6months result: masters in special education.
I don't mind about the days that will be spent for studyin.I am focus on the learning.. I would love that however the range of specialization would be so wide that might not focus on what i really like which is TO be able to teach CHILDREN with LEARNING disability. cost:45K

So there..given these two course at hand i'm kinda confused.
So i hope you could enlighten me..

Please help me go to the path wherein I can teach the children that I

have been wanting to teach.. I feel that's my calling..

thanks alot !

Lookin forward to all your responses!

God bless and may you enlighten me!

I am a very strong proponent of this idea.

Games of strategy, games that involve a lot of math, games that increase vocabulary, games that aid in psychomotor development.

In fact recently there was a study that sort of said Video Gaming was a positive influence on the youth.

Truth be told, the gaming (i.e. board games, card games, miniature games, as I have no information on video games) subpopulation which is predominantly the male youth have a substantially lower incidence of crime and violent behavior. As opposed to the general population.
The fact that you need to at the very least feel that you need brains for these games, as part of your identity, I believe makes you less prone to handle adverse situations violently and would rather use negotiation and intellectual "sparring" to resolve one's issues.
Also games such as the ones stated above encourage communication to resolve conflicts, since you have to discuss moves and strategy with your opponent instead of using your fists or having a computer "compute" the resolution of the conflict. In fact recently there was a study that sort of said Video Gaming was a positive influence on the youth.

Hi.

"The notion of community has been at the heart of the Internet since its inception. For many years, scientists have used the Internet to share data, collaborate on research, and exchange messages. In essence, scientists formed interactive research communities that existed not on a physical campus but on the Internet." (Armstrong and Hagel, 2000). At EduPhil.org, we aim to create an interactive community of professional teachers and education stakeholders. "Online forums provide potential for new forms of collaborative work, study, and community that reduce barriers of time and distance." (Kanuka and Anderson, 1998). "Online discussion forums are a valuable resource for people looking to find information, discuss ideas, and get advice on the Internet." (Arnt and Zilberstein, 2003).

Our forum boasts of 354 members as of writing, but less than 5 of these are actively participating in the discussions. A forum is only as good as the quality and quantity of posts of its most active members, and this is where we would like to request your help. Participation in the activities of virtual communities is crucial for a community's survival and development, although a great majority of most forumers prefer lurking, that is, passive attention over active participation (Rafaeli, Ravid, and Soroka, 2004).

We would like to get feedback on why you prefer to lurk or be inactive in the forum. This is in an effort to improve the forum so that it could be a better resource for teachers and education stakeholers. Specifically, we would like to request you to answer this question:

What could be improved in the forum so that it would be a better resource?

You may choose to provide your answer publicly at the forum (at ) or reply to this email privately if you don't want to send your answer privately. Thank you very much.

There are many ways by which barangays can help in educating out-of-school-youth (OSY) learners:

1. They can pay the honorarium of alternative learning teachers.
2. They can provide community learning centers where out of school youth and adults can take alternative modes of learning.
3. Barangay officials can provide transportation for mobile teachers.
4. The Sangguniang Kabataan can do their share by encouraging OSY
learners to join alternative learning classes.
5. In the absence of a mobile teacher in a community, barangay officials can identify potential alternative education facilitators in the barangay who can be trained by DepEd.
6. The barangay can also shoulder the cost for the reproduction of learning modules used in alternative learning system.

These things were enumerated in a press release issued by DepEd last Nov. 21. I think there are other ways that barangays can help in reaching out to OSY learners.

More than a thousand key officials in the public and private basic education system will be at the 2008 National Educators' Congress at the Teachers Camp in Baguio City on December 2-4, 2008.

The workshops and plenary sessions will be conducted by experts from the Asian Institute of Management and the academe.

The bulk of the participants will be from the different school divisions of the country, but there will also be people from DepEd central and the regional offices. Also, representatives from the PTCA will be present.

Hopefully there will be something good after this congress. (Am I too cynical?)

Last year, 35,187 persons were added to the roster of professional teachers in the Philippines. This year, another 36,617 made it to the list.

And yet, how many teacher positions have to be filled up every year? (This would simply be equal to new positions + vacanted positions - disappeared positions (e.g. in bankrupt schools).)

I think there are just way too many teachers in the Philippines right now. Yet many of these are not properly trained.

Even the LET is flawed; just ask anybody who had taken it. It does not truly measure if a person is competent to become a professional teacher.

OTH, the government is not implementing the provisions of the Professionalization of Teachers Act which mandates that only registered professional teachers could teach. I know of so many private schools whose teachers are not licensed.

Comments, anyone?
