Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
Hi! I need clarification PLEASE regarding the number of required units before one can take the LET. Is it 18 or has it changed to 32 units? Will it change to 32 units? Is there any official statement regarding this? Salamat!!!

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
Update 3/5/11

Subjects to Take
Theory and Concepts Courses (6 units):
* The Teaching Profession
* Child and Adolescent Development or Facilitating Learning

Methods and Strategies (12 units; courses integrating the content specified in CMO 30, s. 2004, should be designed for each of the courses listed below)
* Principles of Teaching
* Assessment of Learning
* Educational Technology
* Development Reading

As summarized by 6059nuy:

Quote:1.) For a person who has graduated a 4-year degree course, the requirement for him/her to be able to take the LET is to take additional 18 units as prescribed by law.
2.) They are most likely limited only to take the LET for BSEd and the equivalent Major Field of Specialization will depend on what course they finished.
3.) The 18 units should be distributed among the 4 clusters specified (Theory & Concepts, 6 units + Methods & Strategies, 12 units) otherwise not all the 18 units will be considered.
4.) The 30 units that a lot of people have been confused about actually came from the Ched Memorandum Order 30 stating that aside from the 18 units mentioned in item 3, CTP/CPE courses should have 12 units of experiential learning courses (Field Study and Practice Teaching)
5.) Apparently, PRC doesn't need to see the 12 units in one's TOR for him/her to be allowed to take the LET. They will only concentrate on the 18 units as mentioned in item 3.
6.) A lot of schools offering CTP/CPE will release the TOR only after the 30 (or more) units they require has been completed.

Hi mabelgrace and welcome to EduPhil.org.

The following is based on my knowledge of relevant PRC and CHED issuances, but I could be wrong. The best thing you can do is print out a copy of this page (specifically this post) and show it to your college dean for verification Smile

The legal basis for allowing graduates of non-education degrees to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers and be considered professional teachers if they pass is Republic Act 7836, otherwise known as the Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994 or simply as The LET Law. Specifically, Section 15 of the said law specifies:

Quote:Sec. 15. Qualification Requirements of Applicants. No applicant shall be admitted to take the examination unless, on the date of filing of the application, he shall have complied with the following requirements:

(a) A citizen of the Philippines or an alien whose country has reciprocity with the Philippines in the practice of the teaching profession;

(b) At least eighteen (18) years of age;

© In good health and of good reputation with high moral values;

(d) Has not been convicted by final judgment by a court for an offense involving moral turpitude;

(e) A graduate of a school, college or university recognized by the government and possesses the minimum educational qualifications, as follows:

(1) For teachers in preschool, a bachelor's degree in early childhood education (BECED) or its equivalent;

(2) For teachers in the elementary grades, a bachelor's degree in elementary education (BSEED) or its equivalent;

(3) For teachers in the secondary grades, a bachelor's degree in education or its equivalent with a major and minor, or a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences with at least ten (10) units in professional education; and

(4) For teachers of vocational and two-year technical courses, a bachelor's degree in the field of specialization or its equivalent, with at least eighteen (18) units in professional education.

As you can see, those with bachelor's degree in the arts and sciences are only required to take 10 units in professional education, according to RA 7836. In practice, however, we generalize these to mean 18 units.

In 2007, the Commission on Higher Education issued CMO 52, which stated this in Section 8:

Quote:In compliance with the [sic] Republic Act 7836 (The LET Law) and with Article II of CMO 30, s. 2004, graduates of non-education degrees shall take 18 units of professional education courses, and 12 units of experiential learning courses (Field Study and Practice Teaching) to qualify for the Licensure Examination for Teachers. xxx

AFAIK, this is the first CHED issuance which mandated the additional 12 units (thus 18 + 12 = 30, not the 32 you are referring to). The problem now is the question of when this should be implemented, since Section 9, Transitory Provision, stated that "HEIs that have been granted permit or recognition for Teacher Education program are required to fully comply with all the requirements in this CMO [No. 52, s. 2007] within a non-extendable period of three (3) years after the date of its effectivity (emphasis supplied)."

I have no idea when CMO 52 was published in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation, but the memo itself was given the date October 17, 2007. Therefore, technically, it is still legal for a teacher training school at this time not to implement the new curriculum - full compliance is only required by October 17, 2010, at the earliest. What would happen to the students of those schools?

If already have your TOR, the best thing that you can do is go to the nearest PRC office and try having your TOR validated. Then please do tell us about the result.

Another thing that I know here - although things might have already change - is that the PRC does not require you to have a certificate diploma in teaching; it will only check education units.

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
From what I saw when I took the LET in September 2008 - the requirement for "uniting" is 18. And they have a list of subjects which are credited towards the 18 units. Some education subjects even if they are educ. subjects are not credited because they are not included in the list provided by PRC. Your TOR will be evaluated by one of the assessors from PRC... hopefully you get someone with common sense and will not turn you away on a technicality.

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
My baccalaureate is Statistics.

I happen to teach in a State College and was forced (sorta) to take LET in compliance to the Education Act. Fortunately, I got a GradDip in Education (about 80 units in Australian system) in 2006. I used it in my application. You know what, it took the PRC assessor some time to let me through. It must be his first. Heheh. Funny but I was kinda relieved. Eventually, I took it and passed last year.

whoaaaa now Im proud to say, I am a PROFESSIONAL TEACHER. Big Grin

RA 7836 is a good read. Another act RA 9293 which amends some provisions of 7836 maybe of interest to read. Maybe admin can also upload as members like me has limited powers to do so.

I think I'll just create a separate part of the website which will contain only laws related to Philippine education and teaching.

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
i don't even know of anybody who took up CTSped and has taken the LET..my only basis is the subjects' list given to us upon enrollment, in which there was a statement that we will be qualified to take the LET once we've completed the course..that's a year-long course with 24 units

do you know of anybody who has a BS Degree and took up CTSped in USC who has taken the LET??
thanks Confused

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
If you have completed the CTSped, you should be qualified to take the LET. But AFAIK, it's not necessary to finish the certificate. I don't even think that PRC will require you to show your certificate of completion of some certificate in teaching degree - only your TOR, where your Education subjects should be credited.

The certificate is issued by the college or university. Meanwhile, the PRC assessor just have a list of specific courses to accredit. If you have 18 units or more from the list, you should be able to take the LET. That's at least the experience of a colleague here.

If any of us has some contacts at PRC, I think we can request a copy of these accredited subjects - I don't think it is a confidential document.

Thank you so much for the info. I find this site informative and very helpful. I hope i will get to finish my 18 units and pass the LET then before the CMO will be enforced next year.

RE: Number of units to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
hi admin,

thanks again for the very helpful info, honestly i was worried since i've already paid for the review classes and it's non-refundable!

i went to USC and had another TOR printed, this time with my grades in CTSped included. Originally, for a year-long course, that's 24 units but I had mine only for 21 units since one 3-unit subject was accredited

For the first sem, it's 9 units for basic education subjects
second sem is on Sped subjects including practicum
(if i had my TOR now i'll be typing the subjects here Big Grin )
