New K-10 Curriculum
Hi all.

DepEd has released the curriculum guidelines for K-10. You can download it from this link. (DO31 s2012)

Some features of the curriculum:
1. All subjects will be taught in a spiral approach. Science will have biology, chemistry, physics and earth sciences per year [1 quarter each] from Grade3-10. The math curriculum also features a strengthened statistics component. Based form the DO, there is no trigonometry component in K-10. I think that this is a good move by DepEd since Statistics is easier and is needed by majority of the students than Trigonometry which is needed only by STEM (sci, tech, engg, math) students

2. MT is the medium of instruction from Grade1-3.

3. In Grade7-10, each subject will meet for 4 hours/week except for Araling Panlipunan (3 hours/week) and EP/Guidance (2 hours/week). There shall be a time devoted for independent/cooperative learning. Off-school activites (extra-curricular) will be also encouraged.

4. Grading system will shift from numerical but level of proficiency:
B beginning (less than 75%)
D developing [75-80)
AP approaching proficiency [80, 84)
P proficient [84-90)
A advanced [90-100]

5. Promotion and retention is by subject. Intervention shall be done after each quarter (e.g. if a student receives a "B", he is required to take remedial classes the next semester or summer, if he received the grade in 4th quarter).

So, what do you think of the new curriculum?

RE: New K-10 Curriculum
Only Grades 1 and 7 of the coming school year will be affected by
the changes mentioned in the DepEd order. This is what I understand from the text of this order. Not all years are changing this June, only Grade 1 and 7 - next year, the grades that will change are 2 and 8. So, if a student is entering 2nd year high school this coming June, that student will not see any of the changes in the curriculum. A student entering grade 2 this coming June should see the changes only after that student has graduated from elementary (grade 6) and enter grade 7. A 2nd grade student will still go through the remaining five years of elementary school with old curriculum. Please correct me if I am mistaken. (In this case, the comment on trigonometry only applies
to students who are just starting high school this year)

RE: New K-10 Curriculum
Yes, that is correct.

SY2012-2013 Grade1 and 7
SY2013-2014 Grade2 and 8
SY2014-2015 Grade3 and 9
SY2015-2016 Grade4 and 10
SY2016-2017 Grade5 and 11 (Senior High School Yr1)
SY2017-2018 Grade6 and 12 (Senior High School Yr2)

I wonder when Deped will release the curricular guidelines for SHS. Other schools, however are implementing the SHS this coming June. The University of Makati, for example, will not accept freshmen students except for paying courses(example Nursing). Instead, they will encourage students to enroll in Grade11.
