Maximum Units for a Part-time College Teacher
I'm about to become a part-time college teacher in a state college, but I'm concerned with the maximum units that I can take.

Does anyone know what are the maximum units that a part-time college teacher can take in one semester? And if you will answer the question, could you please provide the appropriate MECS/DECS/DepEd/CHED Order or the Republic Act that specifies this?

Thank you for your time.

Part-time faculty should not exceed 9 units (9 hours per week) of teaching. I'll give you the CMO number once I trace what it is.

I'm a bit confused now, since a book that I've read stated that the maximum load is 12 units.

I hope you find the CMO soon to help clarify things for me. Based on my own personal research in CMOs, this maximum teaching load appears to depend on the type of department under which one is teaching. The Engineering department, for instance, has a CMO that specifies this. (see Ched Memorandum Order No. 25, Series of 2005).

However, in my case, the CMO for my respective departments (Psychology and History) does not specify anything about a maximum teaching load. Apart from that, I'm going to teach general education subjects, not core or major subjects. (see CMO No. 38, series of 2010, and CMO No. 16, series of 2010).

So, I'm quite confused about this.

If your department is not covered by a special CMO, then CMO 40, s. 2008, Section 39 would apply. Part-time faculty is one who is not full-time. Full-time is one who devotes not less than eight hours of work (not necessarily teaching) a day to the school: Please register to see links.

The CMO you specified doesn't really apply to me since it's geared towards privates HEIs. In my case, I'm working at a state college (SUCs).

I did consult this with the administration, and according to them my current units are allowed under their rules. Hopefully, I don't encounter anything that would cause a problem here.

@Jero: Which SUC are you attached to? SUCs may or may not fall under CHED depending on their charter.
