How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
Please register to see links. founded her Casa de Bambini in 1906. Her experiments and research ultimately produced a worldwide movement. Unfortunately she never trademarked the methodology now known as the Montessori method, and as a result there are thousands of schools out there which claim to be Montessori. Yet they may only contain tidbits of Dr. Montessori's philosophy and methodology in teaching.

As parents, you have to be aware of this fact. Unfortunately, there is no one body which can state that a school is Montessori or not. Nevertheless, here are four questions you can ask yourself when considering a "Montessori" school:

1. Is the learning self-directed?
Dr. Montessori believed that children are capable of discovery and it is that thrill of discovery which leads to all sorts of creative enterprise. The best way to see this is to observe the class. If the teacher teaches, then it is probably not a Montessori school.

2. Are the students active in their learning?
If you see a teacher teaching and the students merely listening, it is probably not a Montessori school.

3. Are there several age groups in the classroom?
In a real Montessori school, traditional grade classifications would not make sense. (Take note though that due to the fact the students may come and go in a school, even some real Montessori school choose to have the traditional grade classifications in the reports. Nevertheless, in the classes, you should see older students mixed with younger students.)

4. Is there a strong cultural emphasis?
Dr. Montessori was one of those well-wishers who wished that the First World War never happened. Thus, this is reflected in her method. In a real Montessori school, you should see those Montessori maps, which tells the students that there is a bigger world outside the classroom.

Thumbs Up RE: How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
i agree with all of these, one thing is the key point student centered, where children dicovers each potentials, and not a teacher centered(authoritharian)

parents should be aware of this there are some school actually advertise that their school is a montessori but its not..

RE: How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
I'm not a Montessori educator, and my knowledge about Dr. Montessori's methods is limited to what I've read about it. It surprises me that there are schools in Cebu City which claims to be Montessori but their teaching methodologies are very different from what I know to be Montessori. So I came up with this little guide. Smile

RE: How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
im also not a montessori major but i had attended a brief workshop on it.

they don't use books. if they have books it just serves as a resource, like a mini-library of some sort. if the teacher is dependent on the book then its probably not a montessori school.

even if there are several age groups in the classroom, it still does not guarantee a montessori school. even the presence of montessori materials does not guarantee it.

i've met a student studying in a "montessori school" here in cebu that has all of these things but it turns out that they are just like a one-on-one instruction...kinda like the self-pacing schools out there. i got confused what they were doing...its like a hybrid of montessori and self-pacing.

RE: How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
i just realized this recently...

in the USA and in Europe...they have an association that determines if the "so-called Montessori school" is really practicing the principles of a Real Montessori school. it also protects the parents and kids since the association lists down all the credited Montessori school in their state or country.

here in the Phils., i haven't heard of anything that credits or investigates if the school is really a Montessori school or not. there is PAASCU the general thing but what about for specialized schools like Montessori schools???and the new and upcoming ones like Frobel schools?

There seems to be a Foundation for the Advancement of Montessori Education in the Philippines but I don't know whether they do accreditation.

We need someone here who is an expert on this.

I don't know either if they have accreditations like that of PAASCU, AACCUP, IQUAME, etc.

Allow me to share though:

"All children are born to achieve.....The goal of early childhood education should be to cultivate the child's own natural desire to learn.." "The real preparation for education is the study of one's self. The training of the teacher....is something far more than the learning of ideas. It includes the training of character; it is a preparation of the spirit..." Dr Maria Montessori, 1870 -1952

RE: How to determine if a school is a real Montessori school
There are so many Montessori schools here in Rizal Province, but as i observed to my friend who already teach in Montessori schools, she always bring lots of books and always create a lesson plan ( we all know that LP is the main source of a teacher on his/her teaching. But for a Montessori school, It is not appropriate to create a LP, because the way of teaching in Montessori is different from regular schools).

Montessori is just a buzzword, a catchy phrase to attract parents so they'll enroll their children. Smile
