NOTE: This was the meeting which started it all. On April 4, 2009, it was decided to have monthly activities, and it was opened to all science and math teachers, not just the double majors. On April 16, 2009, there was a meeting of some people, deciding to create the Cebu Science and Math Teachers Association.
Thank you for every one who attended! The full report is here:

There will be a meeting of all graduates of the University of San Carlos Double Major Program (Physics - Chemistry and Physics - Mathematics) this summer. The particulars:
Date: April 4, 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.
Venue: PAREF Springdale School, Inc. (map here:
http://tinyurl.com/springdale-location ) (Please copy and paste to your browser: tinyurl.com/springdale-location for unregistered guests)
Please bring some food that we can eat. There will be no registration fee, but there will be no food either

(unless you bring some, of course

).
The purpose of the meeting is to make ourselves look back at the ten years of the DM program, and see what the impact, if any, of the DM family in the science and math education in the Philippines. Specifically, we would like to ask ourselves the following questions:
1. x years after graduation, where are we? career tracing, etc.
2. how have we improved science and math education in our own little (or big!) ways?
Also, Mani will present her idea of a monthly meeting for science and math teachers, initially in Cebu, but hopefully to be replicated all over the Philippines. (I know, this is a big plan, so we invite you to come to the meeting and present your objections. But then we are double majors

)
It will also be a night of opportunity for keeping up with friends and knowing what's happening with their lives ;-)
We are also looking for some people who could coordinate per batch or (better?) per institution.

I would also like to include the following comments from Dr. Ed regarding the planned monthly meetings:
Quote:1. Monthly meetings, great, core group of DM but let others in too. Make sure that participants get something concrete out of it that can be applied in the classroom right away. You could have fixed items on the schedule to be prepared by one or more participants such as:
a. the demo of the month (classroom demonstration)
b. test questions and a correction key
c. discussion of misconceptions found in class and what to do about them
d. a lesson on ..... for average students (only present ideas that have been tried in the class?), etc.
2. Choose the priorities such that they coincide with the priorities of pragmatic teachers.
The social part is important. If there is a good atmosphere and practical benefit for one's own teaching, people will keep coming.
