Computer Education
I want to talk here about the subject Computer Education. This subject may not so familiar in public schools but this is known and is considered as an academic subject in most of the private schools here in Cebu. During my time, when I taught this subject, we integrate this subject in T.H.E. Basically, there would be two teachers who will handle this subject. One teacher will handle the H.E.(Home Economics) subject and other will handle the Technology, henceforth we call it Computer Education.

On this thread, I would like to emphasize the importance of integrating Computer Education to the academic curriculum. Some will say that Computer subject may not necessary to be learned formally because most of the students these days will learn using Computer on its on own in non formal way. This can be an ordinary appliance that we can see in our houses. An ordinary tool for games, for chatting, for emailing and for surfing stuffs. Yes these are true. But what is really more important than these things? Can this be a tool in learning new things or it can be a tool for just plainly fun . . .

Secondly, I would like to stress out here on what are the desired lessons that a Computer teacher should discuss corresponding to every grade level. Are there books intended and designed for these?

Finally, there is no Computer Education major in LET. Is there an option for Computer Education majors by which they can take an exam in the other subject areas ?

RE: Computer Education
I would agree with you on the importance of integrating the computer into the academic curriculum. Unfortunately, this viewpoint will meet some resistance esp. among the older members of the profession, who may feel insecure with the younger ones' expertise of these machines.

As to books, there are readily available manuals, but these are for sale, and some companies are making a lot of money out of this. Hopefully somebody would come up with a free manual which could be used by schools, even by public schools.

For Computer Education majors, they might have to take a T.H.E. certificate instead.

RE: Computer Education
Actually, I took up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Computer Education. I am planning to proceed to Elementary Education. Based from what I learned, there are 3 teaching strategies (Strat I to Strat III) that I need to enroll/get first before I can be qualified to apply for Elementary Board Examination in LET. Is this correct?

RE: Computer Education
AFAIK, you only need a certain number of units to be able to apply for a LET. This is done by those taking up masters at UP; and I am sure that there is no Strat subjects in their prospectus. (In fact, I only had one generalist Strat subject, although I did have a Physics Strat and a Math Strat.)

Take a look at your prospectus and if you can count seven three-unit education courses (I'm sure you can), then you can take the LET. Ask your school for a certification that you have taken these seven subjects and I'm sure that PRC will honor that. (BTW, you've just missed the deadline for the application for the August exam--which was yesterday.)

Also, although certificates and going to educative exercises do matter, nothing beats being in the field, and in your case you had been there.

RE: Computer Education
I think I got 11(3-units) and 1(12-units) Education Subjects after I graduated my BSED-CoEd course. Yes, I am qualified to take the LET for secondary level with an area of specialization in Business Technology. But what I am concerned about is I would like to take the LET for Elementary level. Am I qualified for this ? or do I need to get more subjects to qualify?

Thanks Sir for the enlightenment.

No, by law you are qualified to teach in the elementary if you are qualified to teach in the high school (but not the other way around). My co-teachers here tell me you just need to secure some certificate from civil service. So if you haven't taken the LET yet, I would suggest you just take the one for secondary.

Now I understand. Okay, thank you so much Sir. Do you have any online reference where we can see the LET scheduled dates?

RE: Computer Education
Last time I checked, the PRC website was hacked. I did not blog about it though, although I still have the bounced emails I sent to their administrator informing them of the problem Smile

Anyway, here is the PDF file for the scheduled exams this year: http://www.prc.gov.ph/documents/scheduleoflicensure.pdf

At the bottom of p. 3 of that 5-page document, you can see the line for the professional teachers examination: It says Sept. 28, 2008 (Sunday) with a deadline on July 31, 2008 (you can be assured that my co-teacher who informed me wrongly yesterday will get his share of beating :evilSmile.
