all i'm saying is, the essence of the democracy is not fully achieved in our country.. Filipinos are indifferent, even apathetic, to things that they think do not necessarily have no say (like politics).. could this be due to the long years (centuries) of under colonial rule? enforced by the proclamation of Martial law?

my favorite provisions in the Philippine constitution are those that allow people to vote (the right of suffrage), to push for an initiative, to be heard in a referendum and to remove (power of impeachment) of public officials to because in these provisions lie the power of the people in a democracy.. however, Philippine elections are far from desirable, never heard of a proposed initiative, nevr known senate to consult the people in a referendum, and the impeachment/s that we had is more of a political game rather than a movement of the masses..

I believe, that a functional DEMOCRACY (for the people) is just a matter of RIGHTS and DUTIES.

It should be DUTIES over RIGHTS, however in the PH setting, it's inverted (R over D). People fight for their rights (which is the beauty of Democracy), however they often neglect their duties (corruption is a very concrete example).

But still RIGHTS are NOT implemented for the interest of every single Filipino. If you will observe, most these rights serve the interests of the beorguisie class.

Democracy should serve the insterests of ALL Filipinos, not just some part of it.

So if you'll ask "Do Filipinos deserve a democracy?" - my answer is YES.
But if "Filipinos have a democracy?" - it would be a NO.

ironic isn't it? We are a democractic nation but not everyone experience democracy. Some even claim that we should be communists instead.

We will lose most of our RIGHTS if we do so. (like right to property) the government will own everything. Communism i think follows the marx's idea of a classless society. (correct me if i am wrong). If so, it is natural for the masses to go for communism, however, the problem is the beorguisie class: they wouldn't surrender their properties (who would?).
