It is a fact of life that for most education graduates nowadays, call centers are an option. Some say it is a sad option, indicating the lack of teaching jobs in our communities, but on the other hand, there are advantages of starting in a call center instead of directly going to a school as a teacher, perhaps the most important of which is training in the de facto medium of instruction (English).

There are generally two types of call center agents, depending on whether the calls are outbound (you do the call) or inbound (you answer the call). Outbound call center agents are usually telemarketers, that is, they call people on the phone to market products. Sometimes they do a cold call, without prior knowledge of the intended recepient; sometimes, they follow up calls. There are also collectors, who receive a list of people to remind that their credit card bills must be paid. Inbound call center agents, on the other hand, answer queries from customers. Depending on the actual industry serviced, inbound call center agents may have a very hectic calling scheme (e.g. max of two minutes per customer, and everytime you put the phone a new one comes in) or relatively free.

Travel, computers, and banking and finance usually outsource their business processes to the Philippines.

What is required of you to become a call center agent? Call center agents are normally required to be able to type 15-20 words per minute, and to have a good telephone demeanor to be eligible for the position. Above average communication skills is also necessary. Call center agents do not just talk; they have lots of typing to do.

A call center agent must enjoy helping people, have a tactful manner and have a good memory. The ability to multitask, that is, to attend to a lot of disparate tasks at the same time, is also very necessary.

Because of the demand for call center agents, and the high attrition rate, even college students are now being accepted. This could change though, with the ongoing economic crisis.
