RE: Best practices in faculty mentoring
Quote:@alexmag3: Is it a matter of policy that the mentor should not be one of those who evaluate the faculty he is mentoring? What is the rationale behind this policy?
The rational behind the policy is for the 'mentee' to be comfortable with his mentor, who is authorized to observe his classes and comment on his research work. We actually depend much on students' evaluation and the list of accomplishments in evaluating a faculty member.

How relevant do you think student evaluation is? Do you make it a heavy part of the faculty member's performance? I worry about the accuracy and relevance of student evaluations because students (and everyone else) tends to evaluate higher when the person they are evaluating is responsible for evaluating them as well. Well, I guess, it depends on how well you implement the survey.

The problem with student evaluation is that those teachers who give high grades get high grades as well. I do know of some administrators though who swear by the student evaluation; for them, the students are the best evaluators of a teacher.
