Are we teaching too much, too fast, too soon?
I was looking at my five-year-old niece's books the other day and I noticed that they are already teaching addition and subtraction to preschool children.

If I remember right, I never went to a preschool; my first taste of school was in grade one. I also remember that I was in grade five when I first met parallel and perpendicular lines, but it seems these things are now staple in grade three math, or even in some grade one textbooks.

I wonder if we are teaching too much, too fast, and too soon to our children. If we continue with this trend, college-level calculus will be taught in grade six or first year high school, and students would never have the luxury of time to master the basics.

What do you think, fellow EduPhil members? Are we teaching too much, too fast, and too soon?

for me, we are teaching too much...
kinder 2 pupils nowadays have 7 subjects- reading, language, math, science, filipino, religion and sibika...why can't we focus on the basic R's? i really don't agree with our curriculum...can you imagine k1 (3-5 years old) pupils learning about adjectives, subject verb agreement, etc? curriculum makers should put in mind that basics are essentials...

yes, we need to cope with the fast-paced world, but that doesn't mean information explosion,haytz...

Well, that's also my observation with my 2 kids...but I think it's just ok! The problem is...this stuff is usually evident in private schools...but how about others? Those studying in government institution? How about kids in far flung areas? Those kids who's families can't afford to send their kids in pre-school education? It seems we are not fair to them.

These things are ok. I even send my kids at "Kumon" taking reading and math. But, the concern is...are all have the opportunity to send their kids? Government has a big role to these situation. Kaya lang KURAKOT and inuuna kaysa SERBISYONG TOTOO!. Kung lahat ay nag-aaral OK lang 'yon...ito ang aking palagay!

What a nice topic hmmnnn...Sleepy

And then they go to high school not really having learned anything at all.
